Once iHateSpam is installed, incoming email is rapidly analyzed against iHateSpam's spam indicators to determine if a message is spam. Suspicious emails are then placed in a special "Spam" quarantine folder in the user's email system. iHateSpam uses a spam analysis system to determine if a message is spam or not.
+ How does iHateSpam determine if a message is spam?
iHateSpam uses a constantly updated signature engine to determine if a message is spam or not and gives it a score of "spam likelihood". Based on this score a message gets quarantined or not.
+ What if an email from a friend has spam indicators in it?
To reduce the chance of identifying legitimate email as spam ("false positives"), iHateSpam optionally builds a "friends list" of acceptable senders by analyzing your address book. The program can also analyze your sent items and other email folders you designate. Messages from your friends list are skipped over without being scanned.
+ Can I retrieve an email marked as spam?
Yes. Suspicious emails are placed in quarantine folders under your inbox and you can always see them if you open the quarantine folder.
+ What if an email from someone I know gets quarantined as spam?
Sometimes, someone may send you a message with spam indicators, and they are not listed in your Friends List. For example, someone you know could email you with a message that has the subject Line "Lowest Mortgage Rate Ever" — and iHateSpam might consider it spam. That's why iHateSpam has the ability to alert you when mail has been quarantined. You can then click on the email, and ask iHateSpam to add the sender to your Friends List. Email from that person will not be quarantined again.
+ What about Eudora, Outlook Mac and other email systems?
Version 5.0 only supports Microsoft Outlook. However, another version will be out shortly that supports Outlook Express and Thunderbird.
